Emergency Medicine Residency Program

Physician Assistant Residency Program in Emergency Medicine

Overview

Welcome to the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Residency Program. Below you will find a description of our program, which is part of the 5 VA Post Graduate Residency Programs in Emergency Medicine funded by the Veterans Health Administration Office of Academic Affiliations starting in 2019. Our team is excited to offer this pioneering program and we hope that you find useful information below.

We are located in the vibrant urban setting of West Philadelphia; our ED sees close to 23,000 patients a year – with a steady increase of about 1000 additional patients per year, in an interprofessional environment consisting of nurses, NPs, PAs, MDs, PA students, medical students, medical residents and fellows. The population of Veterans that we serve consists largely of elderly Veterans with presentations across the whole spectrum of acuities including many acute over chronic medical conditions. Our admission rate is around 20%, which is higher than the national average.

Our program provides a solid, intensive, 12-month (13x4-week blocks) curriculum covering basic and advanced Emergency Medicine concepts and procedures, in a dynamic clinical and academic environment. Training is provided in our Emergency Medicine Department, in other departments at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center, and at our affiliated medical centers. Ultrasound is incorporated into every rotation, in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania’s excellent Division of Emergency Ultrasound. Simulation is also an integral part of the curriculum with sessions run throughout the year. Trauma, obstetrics and pediatrics exposure will take place at our affiliated sites. Wednesday conferences will provide didactic lectures and grand rounds in a rich environment with other PA and MD resident peers.
