Patient Education
Our Patient Education department is staffed by an experienced patient education coordinator who runs a variety of programs for our patients and their families. In addition, patient information is available in our Library, which includes a collection of easy-to-read health and wellness books, respected health education newsletters, videos and other materials.
The Patient Education Coordinator is Debbie Capone-Swearer, MSN, RN, CNA, BC and her office is located on the 9th floor of building 1, room A953. Her telephone number is 215-823-5800, ex. 6232. The Library is located on the Basement level, room GC115 (below Human Resources).
My HealtheVet
My HealtheVet is the VA’s version of an online Personal Health Record. The My HealtheVet website provides veterans and their families’ reliable patient education information as well as the latest VA News, information about veteran’s benefits and services and tools to track your health. Veterans who get their care at a VA clinic can upgrade their My HealtheVet account to access parts of their health record. Upgrading your My HealtheVet account is accomplished with the In-Person Authentication (IPA) process. Details about this process are included on here on the My HealtheVet site.
Creating an account on My HealtheVet provides you basic access which includes:
- VA prescription refills
- Tools to monitor your personal health data and keep food and activity journals
- The ability to maintain your personal health record
Upgrading your account will provide you will all of the feature above PLUS:
- The ability to view your VA appointments
- The ability to view Chemistry and Hematology lab results
- The ability to view wellness reminders and allergy information
- The ability to send Secure Messages to your participating health care team
- Priority access to new features
Registering for My HealtheVet is easy
Step 1 – Register for an account at www.myhealth.va.gov
My HealtheVet kiosks are available throughout the facility to give patients the opportunity to register during their visit.
Step 2 – Upgrade your My HealtheVet account via the In-Person Authentication (IPA) process
This process can be completed at any of the following locations:
- The Outpatient Clinics in Camden, Gloucester, Ft. Dix and Horsham
- The Library located in the Basement in the Philadelphia VA Medical Center
- The Release of Information department located in the Sub-basement of the Philadelphia VA Medical Center
- During your visit with your Primary Care Team
Step 3 – Opt-In to use Secure Messaging by accepting the Terms & Conditions

Outpatient Classes
Clinical staff provide ongoing health education during regularly scheduled outpatient clinic visits. Courses focus on:
- health promotion
- upcoming tests and procedures
- medications
- diagnoses
- treatments

Inpatient Classes
Clinical staff begin the patient education process at the time of admission, during the hospital stay, and at discharge. Our goal is to provide a hospital environment where patients —
- continually receive updated health information
- are able to ask questions about their health
- can enjoy as comfortably as possible their stay in our facility
VA Television Network
An on-demand education video system is available for all inpatient rooms and in some waiting areas. Ask the staff for further information on how to access the system.
