Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans can learn about their benefits while taking in a Camden Riversharks ballgame, thanks to the Philadelphia VA Medical Center’s fourth annual Welcome Home event.  Welcome Home 2011 will be held Sunday, May 22, at Campbell’s Field.

In addition to enjoying a game in the family-friendly confines of a minor league ballpark, Veterans and their loved ones can learn about their benefits ranging from health care and vocational rehab to the post-9/11 GI Bill.  This event is one of many efforts the VA uses to reach out to this new generation of combat Veterans.

“These men and women earned many benefits through their service to our Nation,” said Lori Maas, a social worker who heads the Philadelphia VA team working with combat Veterans.  “It is our job to help them take advantage of those benefits.”

Each Veteran may bring up to three immediate family members or a significant other.  Gates open at 12 noon with the Riversharks promising an on-field autograph session before the game – guests must arrive by 12:15 to participate in on-field activities. First pitch is at 1:05 pm.  VA will also provide parking and meal vouchers.

Veterans are asked to RSVP directly via e-mail to vhaphioefoif@va.gov.  A copy of the Veteran’s DD214 discharge paperwork will be necessary on the day of the event.

More info for returning Veterans is also available on our OEF/OIF/OND web site.
