Spinal Cord Injury

About the Program

The Philadelphia VAMC, under recommendation of the CARES Commission Report, established and maintains the Spinal Cord Injury & Disorders Support Clinic Team. This team serves area veterans with stable, non-progressive paraplegia (including cauda equine) or tetraplegia, as well as many diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The Support Clinic team works closely with the local SCI Centers at East Orange and the Bronx, ensuring timely and comprehensive evaluations and care. Our Clinic consists of a full time Nurse Practitioner who acts as the PCP for many of our SCI Vets, and as a specialist and consultant for many other vets and professionals. There is a SCI Coordinator, who is a Licensed Social Worker, and assists veterans in the psycho-social and logistical issues associated with their conditions. In addition, the Clinic Team has access to physician guidance and consultation. Through cooperation with other departments such as Prosthetics, Rehab Medicine and Travel, our SCI veterans have a wide array of available services to meet their highly specialized needs.

Philadelphia VA Medical Center has a designated Spinal Cord Injury Coordinator as a point of contact for any questions or concerns. For any inquiries, please call 215-823-5800, ext. 5951.
