Returning Combat Veterans

American Solider with U.S. Flag Philadelphia VA Medical Center is grateful to the men and women who risk their lives to fight terrorism in Afghanistan, Iraq and many other places around the world.

In an effort to improve the process of transitioning the health care of injured/ill combat veterans from Military Treatment Facilities (MTF) to VA Hospitals, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense have collaborated to develop the Seamless Transition Program.  If you are a recently discharged veteran with service in a theater of combat operations, VA can provide you with free medical care for two years from your discharge from active duty for conditions possibly related to your service, regardless of your income status.

The Philadelphia VA Medical Center offers the most advanced technologies and treatment by dedicated, compassionate health professionals. We offer medical care at the medical center in Philadelphia and our outpatient clinics. Enrollment is easy and health care is free for conditions related to military service. We are here to serve you and make sure you receive the health care benefits you have earned through service to our nation. Call us today.

VA Health Care Eligibility

Honorably discharged veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the Reserves and National Guard, who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) or Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), are eligible for 2 years of free health care (from the date of separation from active duty) for conditions you believe are related to your military service. This health care is provided regardless of your income or eligibility status. Note: To be eligible for dental care, your DD-214 must be annotated that you did not receive your final dental care while on active duty. You have 90 days from your discharge date to enroll in the VA Healthcare System to receive dental care.

Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom Coordinator:

We have appointed a special coordinator to assist you in your transition to Philadelphia VAMC. The OIF/OEF Combat Veteran Case Manager provides case management and counseling services to veterans who served in combat after November 11, 1998. The Case Manager works directly with each veteran to ensure the veteran maximizes his or her VA benefits and services. Together, the Case Manager and veteran also address physical, emotional, and social concerns that are associated with being a combat veteran adjusting to civilian life.

Philadelphia VA Medical Center established its Polytrauma Team as part of its designation as a Polytrauma Network Site. This Network Site provides a high level of expert care, a full range of clinical and ancillary resources, and it serves as a resource to other facilities within the network. The facility coordinates the care and level of services required to meet the needs of returning veterans and ensures that patients have access to the same high level of care across the network. Find out more information about the Polytrauma program.
